Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What areas do you cover?

We are based in Merthyr Tydfil and cover Aberdare, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Tredegar, Ebbw Vale, Bargoed and Cardiff, along with the surrounding South Wales towns. If you are not sure whether you are in our area, give us a call on 07584 294650 and we will let you know.

Are you qualified and registered?

Yes. G&M Electrics Ltd is NAPIT registered, so our work is inspected and certified to current wiring standards. Director Gavin Morgan qualified as an electrician in 2018 and carries out every job personally.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Quotes are free. Tell us about the job, or send a couple of photos, and we will come back to you with a clear fixed price before any work starts.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes, emergency call-outs are available. If you have lost power or have an electrical fault that cannot wait, call 07584 294650 and we will help as quickly as we can.

Will I get a certificate for the work?

Yes. Notifiable electrical work is tested and certified, and we give you the paperwork you need for insurance and for selling your home.

How do I pay?

We agree a fixed price with you up front and confirm the payment details before we start, so there are no surprises when the job is done.

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

Most home EV charger installations fall between £700 and £1,000 supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the charger you choose, where it is mounted and how far the cable has to run. We confirm a fixed price before starting.

Will I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?

Not always. If your existing board has spare capacity we can wire the charger straight in. If it does not, we fit a separate small consumer unit just for the charger, which avoids the cost of a full board upgrade.

How long does it take to fit a charge point?

A straightforward home installation is usually completed in a few hours on the same day. We will give you a clear idea of timing when we quote the job.

Can you install a charger at a business?

Yes. We install workplace charge points as well as home units. Get in touch with the number of chargers and the site details and we will put a quote together for you.

Will the cable run be tidy?

Yes. We take care to keep cable runs neat and concealed where possible, so the finished charge point looks like part of the property rather than an afterthought.

How much does a consumer unit replacement cost?

A new consumer unit is usually between £800 and £1,000, depending on the number of circuits and the condition of the existing wiring. We give you a fixed price after a quick look at your current board.

How long will my power be off?

Your power is normally off for around three hours while we carry out the change. We work efficiently to get you back up and running as quickly as possible.

Why should I replace my old fuse board?

Older boards offer far less protection than a modern unit and can trip for no clear reason. A new consumer unit adds RCD and surge protection, brings your installation up to current standards and makes your home safer.

Do you test the installation afterwards?

Yes. Once the new board is in we test the full installation, hand you a certificate and talk you through what has been done.

My lights keep tripping, do I need a rewire?

Not necessarily. Constant tripping is often caused by an old board or a single faulty circuit rather than the whole installation. We can find the fault and, in many cases, a new consumer unit sorts it without the cost of a full rewire.
